MONKEY is based on the Chinese quest saga, “Journey to the West,” rewritten to reflect contemporary issues from the multicultural mosaic of American life. Besides the two fundamental operatic elements of text and music, the three main characters - Monkey, Pig (Zhu), and Sandwoman (Sha) - are life sized Bunraku puppets. Based on Ann Patchett’s award-winning novel, Jimmy López Bellido’s opera Bel Canto depicts how something truly beautiful can spring from chaos and terror. With a principal role loosely inspired by noted soprano Renée Fleming who championed the work, the opera tells the story of what happens when a gathering of international dignitaries at Peru’s vice-presidential mansion turns into a hostage situation. Music becomes the universal language of this riveting story of humanity and redemption, inspired by real-life events. The Chicago Sun-Times has called Bellido "one of the most interesting young composers anywhere today."

Machinations, mind games and unabashed ambitions are rampant in the court of Claudius, Emperor of Rome. No one is more adept at manipulating the political lackeys than his clever wife, Agrippina, sister of the emperor Claudius overthrew. Power-hungry and keen on revenge, Agrippina will stab just about anyone in the back to get what she wants — her son Nero seated on the throne. When Claudius names his favorite general as his successor, Agrippina will have to play her cards just right. Considered Handel’s earliest masterpiece, sex, intrigue and sharp humor fuel this biting political satire.
